Halloween Candy
Please be advised! Any Halloween Treats brought to school after Nov 2, may be eaten by teachers! Just kidding, but please leave it at home. It’s been well documented that sugar activates the brain’s pleasure response, but scientists are discovering that it impacts the brain in a variety of other ways. When students consume a lot of sugar and then attempt challenging tasks, like math problems, the brain’s hypothalamus allows the body to release a lot of cortisol. Known as the stress hormone, this substance impedes memory. When children’s bodies are flooded with cortisol at school, they struggle to pay attention to their lessons and find it difficult to sit quietly. When their attention is elsewhere, they find it difficult to retain information they’re taught

Rosscarrock School Fundraising Casino Monday, January 21st & Tuesday, January 22nd, 2017 WE NEED YOUR HELP - PLEASE SIGN UP! SIGN UP AT THIS WEBSITE: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0F49ACAB29A1FF2-2019 OR EMAIL RAYELENE AT: [email protected] OR CALL/TEXT RAYELENE AT: 403-890-8345 The casino is taking place at Cowboys Casino (421-12 Ave SE). This event makes a big impact for the school (the last one raised ~$70,000) but requires 36 volunteer shifts. It is important that we secure our key volunteer position by early November so the paperwork can be submitted. All of these positions are very easy and our casino advisors are with us for the entire duration of the casino to train us at the beginning of each shift and guide us every step of the way. Volunteering at the casino helps to raise much needed funds for school programs and initiatives and is a great way to meet other families in the school! Did I mention you get a free meal during your shift? If needed, the cost of babysitting and transportation for volunteers can be covered by our casino fund. Please contact me in advance if this is required. If you have any questions, please be sure to contact me! Thank you in advance for your support, Rayelene (Parent Volunteer Casino Coordinator) On Monday, the grade 3's will walk to Westbrook library as part of the Crime Not to Read program. Please make sure students are dressed in comfortable walking shoes and warm clothing!
This week in Math we will be focusing on addition with regrouping all week. On Thursday, students will have an assessment.
In Science, students watched "Diary of a Spider." We had lots of conversation about how the story managed to incorporate important factual information about spiders. Then, students listened to it a second time and independently recorded information in their graphic organizers. Today was the last day for students' to put the finishing touches on their Alberta iMovies. I am so excited to watch them all tomorrow afternoon! Reminders for this week: Thursday is Jersey Day! No school Friday (which also means...no spelling test this week!) :) Mrs. Rowein Today in Math, we applied recently learned skills of regrouping base tens to adding 2 and 3 digit numbers. Most students are able to show their learning with a picture and by "stacking' numbers.
In Language Arts, we read the book "Pumpkin Hill". It had the most fantastic words! We wrote down many examples of juicy words while we read. Later in the day during writing time, we used this book as inspiration in planning our own piece of Halloween writing. As a class, our goal continues to focus on adding details and descriptive language in order to improve the content of writing. Today in Science we watched the story/video called "Diary of a Fly." Then, as a class, we filled in a graphic organizer with information we learned about the fly's life. Turns out there was a lot of important information in this story! We continue to have conversations in class about respecting others, especially when others ask us to stop doing something that is bothering them. Everyone learns better when they feel happy and calm, and we need to ensure our actions are serving to help, not hurt others. Reminders: Spelling test tomorrow Library tomorrow :) Mrs. Rowein Today in math we reviewed adding 2-digit numbers, and used base ten pictures to demonstrate our process.
In writing, our focus continues to focus on developing content of writing by adding more details. Today the students had a mini-lesson on descriptive or "juicy" words, and then completed a similar task to last week where they had to add details to a "basic" piece of writing. In partner reading, we are now well into our Chapter Book Challenge! Students put a marble in a jar for every chapter book that they read. So far we already have 5 marbles in the jar! When it is full students will get a special reward! We were back to soccer today and will continue soccer for at least the next week. I also taught the game "Categories" to the kids. Homework tonight: Teach your family how to play! We finished our second round of Reader's Theatre with the Elephant and Piggie books. Students will continue to have opportunities to read and speak in front of others on a daily basic. After recess, students were introduced to our new Science unit: Animal Life Cycles. This unit will rely heavily on student research and observation- it will definitely be a challenge that I hope they are up to! Reminders: study for spelling test! :) Mrs. Rowein We started our day with a Friday Walk and Talk. Finally the weather is warm and actually feels like fall!
This morning students did their spelling test. I was able to mark them and send them home today. I have to say, it was apparent that most students studied hard this week- great job! In Math, students tackled problems. Here is the challenge problem for today- try it at home with your family over the weekend! How many different ways can you represent the number 3572? After music, we had literacy/art block combo. Students were given free choice and half an hour to draw a picture of whatever was on their mind of inspiring them today. They used pencil and pencil crayons for their piece. Then, they had the following half hour to write a creative piece that connected to their work of art. On early dismissal days, students are able to have a mid morning snack while they work independently. This is not the same as lunch. Some healthy snack examples include: yogurt, fruit, veggies, crackers, hummus, cheese, low-sugar granola bars, trail mix, deli meat, homemade muffins/baked goods. Reminder: Monday is picture day! Come to school with your brightest smile! :) Mrs. Rowein This morning in Math we continued work with regrouping base tens. Yesterday the students used blocks to concretely model their thinking. Today they used pictures. A big goal for many students in math is to organize their work so that it is legible, and makes sense. Remember, one of the areas of assessment in Math is on students ability to communicate their mathematical thinking! This means to either write about it, verbally explain, draw, or use concrete or numerical models.
In Language Arts, students added details to a basic paragraph to make it more interesting. I was actually quite impressed with the creative ideas students came up with! In Phys. Ed, we played our first modified game of soccer. Students played hard, demonstrated positive sportsmanship, and had fun! It was enjoyable to watch them. Most students are on the final stages of their iMovie, which is recording their voices as they narrate the picture slideshow they've put together. We are continuing to work on a second round of Reader's Theatre over the next two weeks. We also took a bit of time today to practice tomorrow's spelling words. Don't forget spelling test tomorrow! More reminders: Walk and Talk tomorrow morning Library tomorrow We started our day with Jump Math. Grade fours practiced new skills they have learned in rounding to the nearest ten or hundred, and grade threes continued practicing place value- this time using their knowledge of place value to add 10 or 100.
In Language Arts, our current class focus is adding to the content of our writing by explaining our ideas. As a class, we wrote a paragraph on our dream tropical vacation. We came up with three ideas of things we would like to do while on vacation. Then for each idea, students came up with details to explain exactly what it would be like. As a school, a big part of our school development plan is writing. One of our writing goals is to improve conventions in writing (punctuation, spelling and grammar). I've noticed that many students are still not using capital letters in the right place, and this was evident on their spelling test. Only proper nouns should receive capital letters on a spelling test. They should not appear in the middle of a sentence unless the word is a proper noun. Students are familiar with proper nouns, and in class we talk about proper nouns as being names of people or places, and titles. After lunch students worked on their iMovie scripts. They are working very hard to ensure they add lots of details to explain their learning, and speak clearly and accurately. This week, we are continuing to work on Reader's Theatre as a way to practice speaking with clarity and expression. We continue to work on soccer skills next week, and will be on to modified soccer games next week. Reminders: Friday Spelling test! New words went home today. Picture day is October 15. |
