I'm excited to have the opportunity to meet with our families of Room 20 once again during the upcoming Student Led Conferences. These will take place on the evening of Thursday March 21 (4:30pm -8:00pm), and the morning of Friday March 22 (8:00am-1:00pm). The conferences are designed for students to share their learning with their families at this stage of the 2018-2019 school year. Booking for conferences is now open via the new PowerSchool portal at https://sis.cbe.ab.ca/public/home.html

Today was our trip the the Calgary Humane Society! It started off as an informational presentation on the work the CHS does. They also taught us about empathy, and made the connection between irresponsible treatment of animals and people. Then we had a tour of the whole shelter, and saw many animals! Lastly, we got to meet a very friendly dog named Lucy. Lucy was well trained and calm, and knew lots of tricks!
When we got back from our field trip, students had a late lunch. In Language Arts, most students finished working on their informative paragraph. In Math, we continued some work around measuring in millimeters, and converting centimeters to millimeters. Reminders: Library and Yoga tomorrow! Student-led conferences are next Thursday and Friday! Please sign up for a conference time. Students will be showcasing activities we do in class, and sharing some of their completed work. :) Mrs. Rowein Friendly reminder that our field trip to the Calgary Humane Society is this Thursday. Please ensure students are at school on time so they do not miss the bus! Students should have a large breakfast because they will be eating lunch later than usual. I will provide students with a small morning snack.
:) Mrs. Rowein This month, we have been focusing on nutrition every day! Today students received a copy of Canada's food guide. This year, Canada's food guide was completed revamped. The new food guide does not include a required number of servings, but rather a visual of what every meal should look like. The new food guide also gives healthier whole grains and meat/alternatives option than the previous guide. That being said, the previous food guide still has the same information on what to eat the most of (vegetables and whole grains), and includes facts about the importance of a healthy lifestyle. I have posted a link to the "new" food guide below. On this same website, you will find nutrition tips, and healthy recipes.
Students homework for the week: choose a healthy meal you enjoy and HELP your parents prepare it! With the right training and supervision, students at this age are capable of washing and prepping fruits and vegetables, and measuring and mixing ingredients. I'm excited to hear about what everyone cooks up! https://food-guide.canada.ca/en/ :) Mrs Rowein Today students started a new writing task in Language Arts. They will be writing an informative paragraph on a topic of their choice. In order to be successful, they need to choose a topic that they already have lots of knowledge on. Today we brainstormed topics together, students chose their individual topic, and planned out 5-7 facts about it that they want to include in their paragraph.
This was our math problem today- it took students two days to find a solution! Try it at home. There are chickens and goats together in a pen. In total, there are 32 animal legs. How many chickens, and how many goats are there? Find all possible solution. All week we have been watching tutorials from artists and practicing realistic facial features. Today we finally practiced the smile. Tomorrow we will be putting it all together (with our own unique twists of course!) to create realistic self portraits. It is incredible how much students have improved during this process, as well as how calm and focused they have been throughout. In Phys. Ed, we have been playing keep-up with beach balls. Today, students were taught the proper volleyball pass, and practiced passing with me. In Math we have just started a new unit on measurement. This year is the first time grade 3's are expected to use standard units. Today we looked at what a centimeter is, and students practiced measuring a range of items around the classroom. Reminders for tomorrow: Yoga! Spelling test! Field trip forms due! Library! :) Mrs. Rowein
Download the March Nutrition calendar to your device and follow along all month at home! Anything underlined in blue is linked to an online resource like recipes and information.
Today in Math, students worked on creating their own word problems using multiplication. They had to be able to write their problems in full sentences, give enough information to solve, ask a clear question and create an answer key.
Over the last few weeks, we've been learning word families and spelling patterns through easy alphabet letter games. Be prepared to learn some of our games at Student-Led Conferences at the end of the month! This month in Phys. Ed we will be focusing on net and wall games, as the volleyball and badminton nets will be set up. We will learn skills for games like badminton and volleyball using more developmentally appropriate materials, and simple games that are fun for kids. In art this week, we will continue to focus on drawing realistic facial features, and using feedback to improve our drawing. Hopefully by Friday we have had enough practice to draw a full self-portrait using what we've learned about realism! Today in Social Studies, students wrote a fact-based paragraph to answer our big question: What challenges did early settlers face when immigrating to Alberta? How have they impacted our province? Tomorrow students will be self-assessing their work and have time to conference with me to improve their writing. Today I sent home field trip forms for our upcoming trip to Calgary Humane Society. There is no cost associated with the trip. Forms are due back by Friday March 8. March is nutrition month! All month we will be "Eating the Rainbow." Students are encouraged to pack fruits and vegetables every day in their lunch. Its a great opportunity to get kids talking about healthy food- and even taking responsibility for prepping their own lunches! :) Mrs. Rowein |
