Swimming has been so much fun this week! Thank you for continuing to dry out towels and swimsuits for the following day. A big thanks to the volunteers who are helping this week too.
As we have dived into our study of materials and construction, we ask that you provide some supplies in order to help your child create a bridge on Thursday afternoon. The class will have string, popsicle sticks, cardboard, and tape but if there is something else your child would like to bring to class please help them do so. Some suggestions are common recycled goods like pop bottles, juice cartons, yogurt containers etc. Almost anything that would be thrown into the recycling would be a great addition to the construction of our bridges. Also we are starting a boys club next week and we would love for the boys in our class to sign up and join! It will take place during Monday lunch hour and promises to be a fun experience.

Science has been a lot of fun as we had the chance to build different instruments as well as create sound proof boxes. Our Hearing and Sound unit is now over and we are eager to begin our unit on Construction. Today we tried to build the tallest tower with only tape and dry spaghetti noodles. It was difficult but we learned a lot.
As we continue learning about measurement we have grown increasingly confident in our abilities. We hope to move into measuring mass in the next couple of days. In P.E. we are finishing up our unit on basketball and have been doing some fun relay races. It is great to see how much effort everyone has been putting into our time in the gym. This upcoming Friday there is a workshop on Screen Time offered at Rosscarrock hall, which will be greatly beneficial to your child. Knowing how much screen time for children and students is a tough question and I'm sure this will shed some light on the many questions surrounding the issue. Please come! Happy New Year to all students and families! After a restful break, we were excited to get back in the classroom!
This month in Language Arts, students will be working on gaining more independence with larger writing tasks. We will continue to focus on some common writing themes, such as vocabulary building, sentence structure, and mechanics in our writing. During the first half of the year in Social Studies, students learned all about the geography of Alberta, Alberta's natural resources, and ways that Albertans live off the land. Over the next six weeks, we are going back in time, to learn about the traditional way of life of Alberta's Indigenous people. As many may know, we no longer have a music specialist in the classroom. Students were given a survey and have chosen to focus on dance, singing, and using technology to mix and create music during their normal music block. Music will not be reported on next term. In Health last semester, we focused heavily on the three pillars or care, goal setting, and kindness. This semester, we will be learning more of the physical elements of health- starting with swim safety. Students new Science unit this month is all about building things! Students will get to experiment with a variety of materials and designs. In Math, students will continue to cycle back to number sense and operations. This month, they will be covering their measuring unit. Parents can support their children at home by providing opportunities to measure things around the house. For example, measuring distances, heights, wights, baking quantities- the opportunities are endless! We are looking forward to the second half of the year! :) Mrs Rowein and Mr Abma Rosscarrock School is extremely fortunate to have been chosen as one of five Calgary schools that will participate in Alberta Education’s School Nutrition Pilot Program from January 13-June 19, 2020. The program will provide students the opportunity to receive all or part of a daily breakfast consisting of the four food groups. This will be provided at no cost.
The program follows the Alberta Nutrition Guidelines for Children and Youth, and will provide food choices such as cereal, muffins, milk, fresh fruit and eggs. Calgary Meals on Wheels will provide the food choices offered. Every student can participate. If they are hungry, they can eat! Parents and staff members are also welcome to join them for a meal. The program not only provides opportunities for students to try new foods, it will also provide an opportunity for social interaction outside of the classroom. To learn more about the school nutrition program, please visit, Alberta School Nutrition Plan or contact Somer Gotmy, Breakfast Supervisor and Lead Lunch Supervisor: [email protected] Our breakfast program runs daily from 8:40 AM to 9:00 AM, and is free for all students. Students are to come to the lunchroom doors at 8:40 AM. They will have up to 20 minutes to eat, followed by 10 minutes of supervised play outside. Students who arrive at school after 9:00 AM may ‘grab and go’. This means they are permitted to take certain food items (excluding milk) into the classroom to start their day. We look forward to seeing you on January 13, 2020. Brenna Fraser Principal |
