On Wednesday, May 1, 2019, Albertans are invited to take part in Hats On! For Mental Health and wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of positive mental health. Schools can participate by encouraging students and staff to wear hats and engaging in conversations focused on understanding mental health and the importance of removing the stigma associated with mental illness.
You can learn more about Hats On! For Mental Health by visiting canwetalk.ca, a website sponsored by the Alberta Teachers’ Association and the Canadian Mental Health Association that includes a variety of mental health resources for schools. The focus on mental health promotion continues during Mental Health Week, which is being held this year from May 6 to 10. Students who are mentally healthy are resilient and better able to learn, achieve success and build healthy relationships. You can learn more about supporting positive mental health in schools by visiting the Alberta government website at www.alberta.ca/mental-health-in-schools.aspx.

This week in Math will be cllllll about division! I have been impressed at how fast students have caught on to division- especially my grade threes who are new to this operation! When learning about division, we focused on similar strategies that were introduced during multiplication, including equal groups, arrays, and repeated addition. Today we discussed multiples, and students began to make connections between their multiplication and division facts.
In Language Arts, students continue to work in their literature circles. Many groups are getting close to finishing their novels! Daily responses are being used to assess students understanding of their reading. In Science, students have now finished their persuasive letters to Mrs. Fraser, convincing her to allow us to start a classroom compost program. We realized that food waste in landfills is a huge issue in Alberta, and that as a school, there are few opportunities to compost our food waste. Our focus is now shifting to plastic waste. Today, students learned about the harmful affects on animals and bodies of water when plastic is not recycled properly. For Friday, all students must collect as much plastic as they can to use for our recycled plastic art sculptures. :) Mrs. Rowein Dear Families,
We have had a large number of students develop strep throat. We will be doing a deep clean of the school and continue to promote hand washing. Below is some information to help guide you about strep throat. Strep Throat Information § Strep throat is a bacterial infection that may cause sudden, severe sore throat, fever and tender nodes in the neck. § Strep throat should be treated with antibiotics. § Sometimes a throat swab at your doctor’s office is necessary to tell if the sore throat is caused by strep bacteria. § Antibiotic treatment can help ease symptoms and may prevent future problems. Strep throat can spread to others until 24 hours after you begin taking antibiotics. During this time, students should not attend school. When should you call for help? Call your doctor or seek immediate medical care if: § You have a new or higher fever. § You have a fever with a stiff neck or severe headache. § You have new or worse trouble swallowing. § Your pain becomes much worse on one side of your throat. Watch closely for changes in your health, and be sure to contact your doctor if you are not getting better after 2 days. For health information call Health Link at 811. This is already shaping up to be a busy week in Room 20!
In Math, students are working on their Dream Home project. The project involves them having too design their dream home, and measure the area and perimeter of each room. Next up for math is measuring weight and learning about mass! In Language Arts today, students had their first Literature Circles. Some struggled with having to stay on task independently, and respond to their reading to the best of their ability. We will keep trying though! By grade 3 and 4, it is important that kids are given a chance to take responsibility for their own learning and behavior. In Phys Ed this week we are working on basketball skills. By Thursday, we will be learning some simple basketball-style games that can be played on the compound during recess. In Science, this week is all about the Earth! Students have learned how nature naturally recycles organic waste. They have also learned the benefits of composting, and the negative effects of throwing organic waste into the landfill. Next up, is trying to convince our school community to bring small compost bins into each classroom! On Thursday, we will be connecting with the Kindergarten class for some special Earth Day activities. The grade 3s and 4s will be helping the Kindergarten to plant a seed, then doing a school-yard clean-up with them. Thursday is also our student teacher, Ms. HIllier's last day. It has been so wonderful having her here- we will be sad to see her go! This is a short week. There is not school on Friday or next Monday. Date: Thursday April 4th, 2009
Time: 6:00pm (doors open at 5:45pm) Rosscarrock'n Through the Decades This year's Spring Concert will be a tribute to Rosscarrock School's storied history and a celebration of the many friendships that have passed through over the years. From Queen to Bruno Mars, our students will take you back in time on a musical journey you'll remember for decades to come! "Good friends, good books, (*good music) and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life." Spring is in the air and we are feeling refreshed after a week's break!
Yesterday in Math, students reviewed their estimation and measurement skills before completing an assessment today. Our next step is to transfer these skills to geometry. In Language Arts, we are reviewing the "jobs" for literature circles, and reading a series of short stories. Yesterday we read "A Family is a Family is a Family" and students wrote a connection response about what makes their own family unique. Today we read "The Sun is Kind of a Big Deal," and students identified and described meaning of some new scientific words. Our student teacher, Ms. Hillier, will be with us for the next few weeks. Yesterday she introduced our Science unit, Waste in Our World, and students made predictions and observations about a disposed banana peel. In Health this month, we will be focusing on making healthy choices including personal hygiene, health and wellness, and saying no to dangerous substances. For those who were unable to make it to student conferences, please feel free to email me to schedule a meeting if you would like to discuss your child's progress. Today art was sent home that was on display at conferences. Have your child explain our creative process with you. Reminder: Library, spelling test, and yoga on Friday! |
