Our Grade 3's and 4's are learning some of the vocabulary that is used in math this year. We are also hoping to finish up our unit on Place Value in the next couple weeks. Our little scientists are taking a look at what they can reuse, what they can reduce, and what they can recycle and would love some at home examples that they could share with the class either tomorrow or on the 26th. Soon we will discuss toxic waste and where we can dispose of something that can't go in the landfill.
Making our maps of Alberta is something we are all looking forward to! If you have any extra materials please send them to school as soon as possible as it would be great to have more than necessary. Friday is Rosscarrock's Terry Fox Run! Please ensure students are dressed in comfortable running shoes and warm clothing. Parents are welcome to join for our assembly beginning at 11:45, and stay for the run following. Thank-you for your support!

Next week, students will be creating large "touch and feel" maps of Alberta. This weekend, their homework is to collect materials to represent Alberta's regions, landforms, vegetation, bodies of water and interesting places. Some ideas for materials include:
-fabric -patterned/coloured paper -buttons -stickers -pipecleaners -thread/string -cardboard -feathers -glitter glue -pop bottle lids -leaves -coloured tape -egg cartons I will supply students with poster paper, cardboard, and some felt, as well as scissors/markers/glue etc. All the other creative materials need to be brought in from home no later than Tuesday September 24. *If students have their own hot glue gun that parents allow them to use, they may bring that in as well. :)Mrs. Rowein Please come to Meet the Teacher on Thursday September 19, or Friday September 20. You can register for a particular time with your teacher through CBE school conference manager.
This year, we will have food available during Meet the Teacher. When you visit your classroom, you will receive a ticket for pizza on Thursday, or breakfast items on Friday. Hope to see you there! Mrs. Rowein and Mr. Abma Our Walk and Talk on Friday mornings is a highlight of the week as we get to be outside and talk with our classmates. We got to play some games in Science as we got to choose the best way to dispose of certain materials. We discovered that some things need to be brought to certain recycling depots or the fire hall to be dealt with properly. We also kept on working on our illustrations of how the world looks now that humans have created so much waste. After snack we were excited to begin using the computers and practiced logging onto them. Next week we look forward to using them again to start typing this year. We got to end the day with Library and can't wait to read our new books over the weekend!
Language Arts continues to be fun for us all as we kept working on our "If I made the Rules" assignment. We got some time afterwards to help make the banners for the Terry Fox assembly which we are looking forward to on the 27th. All of us scientists observed worms in a compost and thought it was very interesting. It started getting us to think about what we could do at home to help prevent so much waste. Today we returned to playing some of our favorite tag games in gym class! After getting some good running practice into our day, we ended up completing a lot of work in math class. We're getting very good at place value and are moving on to using written words to express different digits.
Our Wednesday Social Studies class was interesting as we learned all about Alberta's Foothill region. After taking notes on that we got to read a book called, "Flight School" which was very entertaining. Music class was great as we got to use the rhythm sticks to create simple patterns. We always spend some time after lunch recess to quietly read and have been enjoying the time to read our library books. In Science we talked about all the garbage that humans make and where some of that waste goes when not put away properly. We also watched, "The Lorax" which showed us how pollution and industry can hurt nature in many different ways. We tried our best at throwing overhand today in P.E. class and are looking ready to play some passing games in the next couple days. In math we worked on expanded form and writing out numbers in words.
Today started out great as we began our day with some fun word scrambles that got our brains going early in the morning. We followed that up with taking notes on the different landscapes and geography that is found in Alberta. In music class we learned a fun game involving cups and playing different rhythms. In Science class we imagined what the world would look like if there was no human waste in it but only waste that was organic. We tested our throwing accuracy in P.E. with our bean bag toss and were impressed at the skill of our classmates. Math was a lot of fun as we played a game where we tried to create the number given by Mr. Abma out of base 10 blocks as well as drawing it out on a whiteboard.
Our 3/4's have made an agreement that if every student brings in 1$, then the students will get to soak Mr. Abma and Mrs. Rowein on the day of the Terry Fox assembly. We hope to see the first donations to cancer research come in soon! Our rainy Monday started with using maps and understanding what an Atlas is. It has been helpful for Social Studies as we are studying Alberta and developing an understanding of where it is. In Language Arts we kept learning the story of Terry Fox, which has been very interesting for our students, and we are excited to bring in donations for the assembly later in the month! In Physical Education the grade 3/4's played a game tossing bean bags back and forth and were awesome at it. In Science our interest in compost took us to learning about worms and how helpful they are to our environment. We continued with our place value unit in Math and began drawing images to help us understand the relationship between our groups of 1's, 10's, 100's, and 1000's. Our classroom is becoming a great place to learn as some of the students are showing the ability to be amazing leaders!
This morning was a fun one as the students got to spend some time playing an introduction game called, “Same as Me”. We ended up diving into our studies with a day full of introductions to our new units. In Social Studies, we began learning about Alberta and the wonderful city of Calgary. In math, we opened up our work books and began focusing on Place Value with our 1’s 10’s, 100’s, and 1000’s. After recess our discussion about Waste in Our World led us outside where we found lots of different litter that didn’t belong outside but belonged in either the recycling, the compost, or in the garbage. We’re quickly becoming experts on the best possible way to get rid of our waste!
We are off to a great start in room 20! We have spent the last two days getting to know each other with games and icebreaker activities. We are also learning the class routines and rules.
Today in Language Arts we read "We Don't Eat our Classmates." Then, students created their own rules about what we DON'T do in Room 20. Then students learned a rhyming alphabet cup game. In Math, students played place value games where their goal was to make the biggest number. Phys. ed this week has been all about learning routines, and sportsmanship through teamwork and tag games. We also started a new unit in Science today. Our big question we will be focusing on is: Where does our waste go? Students looked around for different types of waste and determined how we would properly deal with that waste using the garbage, compost, and recycling bins we have in our school. This Friday we will have our first "walk and talk" morning. Please make sure you are dressed for the weather! :) Mrs. Rowein and Mr. Abma. |
