Yesterday something exciting happened for Mrs. Rowein's class! They had waited for a long time, but November 26, 2018 was finally the day! Butters- the insanely adorable bunny- came to Room 20! When Butters got to the school, the kids were super excited t meet and see her. Butters came because Mrs. Rowein wanted her students to experience having an animal in the their classroom. Another reason is because she fit in their science unit on animal life cycles. At the end of the day, the loss were sad, but their teacher said, "Don';t worry! She will be back later this week!

In Math this week, our focus has continued to be on subtraction. We did a short lesson on estimation, and will continue to circle back to it in our other units. Students have a math assessment tomorrow.
In Language Arts, we are looking at news articles, and identifying important information. All articles have come from the website NewsELA. I love this website because it has up-to-date articles on things kids are interested in, and for every article the reading level can be adjusted. We began a new Social Studies unit this week on Alberta's Aboriginal History. Our first focus is a cultural study on the Blackfoot Nation. We ordered a museum kit from the Glenbow, and have been examining artifacts and photos of clothing as an introduction to our learning. Reminder: Parent Teacher Interviews are this week! That means no school on Friday. There will also be a Book Fair running during the same hours as Parent-Teacher Interviews. :) Mrs. Rowein This week we have continued our focus on subtraction strategies. We have practiced traditional algorithm, pictures, jump, and decomposing. Today we specifically looked at subtracting from 100, and a new strategy 99+1. Students found that using a strategy like 99+1 or decomposing was easier to compute in their head than the traditional algorithm.
In Language Arts, students have been creating Social Stories. These are stories that connect to our learning in Health. All stories tell about a difficult real-like situation, such as not making a team you try out for. The stories then show the main character dealing with the difficult situation in a positive way. In Science, students are almost finished their Diary of an Animal stories. We will be shifting our focus to Social Studies next week. All students now have an activated Raz Kids account, under the teacher username rosscarrock2. Raz Kids is a great home reading tool that I highly recommend implementing it as a daily reading program! Reminders: -spelling test tomorrow -walk and talk tomorrow -Future Day tomorrow! :) Mrs. Rowein Students continue to work on subtraction with regrouping in Math. We have used pictures, the traditional algorithm, and just today, the jump strategy to learn about regrouping.
Our class is running this year's Remembrance Day assembly! We've been busy working on a wreath and display for the assembly. Our class will also be leading all the songs that are part of the assembly. Our partner reading has changed from a "reader response: style to a book talk. A book talk is similar to a movie review, and students must share it with their classmates when they finish a book. In Science, students are busy working on the rough draft of their Diary of an Animal. Their target is to add explanation and information to the ideas they have already come up with in their planner. Spelling words went home Monday. We are going to continue to have spelling tests every full week throughout the year. Please support your child with spelling by practicing with them at home. Exposing children to high quality literature also helps them build vocabulary and phonemic awareness. :)Mrs. Rowein Today in Math, students were introduced to subtraction with regrouping. It was a topic that was very challenging for many, particularly once I introduced the traditional algorithm. Parents can support their child at home by making practice questions for subtraction, and encouraging their child to solve it in the way that is easiest for them. An assessment was sent home today from our previous number sense and addition unit.
Our Science stories are in full swing now! Most students were able to complete the planning stage of their Diary of an Animal. It is proving to be tricky to not only plan an interesting story, but connect scientific fact to those story plans! On Wednesday, we have a pet bunny visiting our classroom. If all goes well, she will continue to come to school while we have our Animal Life cycles unit so students can learn to care for an animals needs. We have had many discussions about treatment of animals and the responsibility a pet brings. Students will earn their time with our pet by showing me they are responsible, respectful, and trustworthy. Today we had a lockdown practice. I have to say, it was the best practice I have ever seen from a group of students! Students new exactly what to do and took the drill seriously. Great job! Our school Remembrance Day assembly is Friday, and our class is responsible for planning it! Two students will be the masters of ceremonies, and our whole class will be singing as well as making a display for the assembly. Reminders: Photo retakes Wednesday! New spelling words went home today- practice them throughout the week! :) Mrs. Rowein. This week students learned a variety of mental math strategies to solve addition problems. These strategies are useful in a real-world context, when pencil and paper is not always available! They are also helpful during Friday math games ;)
Students finished their descriptive "spooky" Halloween writing yesterday. Parents can expect it to be sent home tomorrow. In Science, we have been working away on students' Diary of an Animal assignment. After days of research and discovery, we finally started planning our diaries today! In Health we continue to focus on the Bucket Filling and Dipping analogy. Today in conversation we noticed that while all students know what it means to bucket dip, we still have dipping happening on a regular basis. It is important to remember that while we cant always control our emotions, we can control the actions we choose when we are feeling upset or angry. Reminders: Walk and Talk tomorrow! Spelling test tomorrow! Library tomorrow! :) Mrs. Rowein |
