What a wonderfully busy week we've been having!
In Math, students created wish lists for our Mustard Seed backpack. Then they searched for prices and adjusted their wish list as necessary to fit within a $50.00 budget. We've also been looking at words problems that include both addition and subtraction of money totals. Today in Social Studies, students finally began creating their piece of art that will show their understanding of Blackfoot way of life and beliefs. We also finished our Novel Study today! Everyone agreed Fantastic Mr. Fox was a fantastic book! We plan to watch the movie version some time before Christmas. Yesterday students chose activity and games to play in Phys Ed for the remainder of our days before break. Today we went outside and create sculptures in the snow. We will also be outside on Friday for Phys Ed. Don't forget to wear snow pants and mittens! Reminders: Spelling test Friday Movie Night is next Thursday, December 20! :) Mrs. Rowein A news article written by Room 20 students....
Did room 20 start a trend? Will other classes start to bring pets ? When baby Butters came to room 20 everyone was so excited! The class is full at lunch every day she is here. Miss Gaspar's class says that she is going to bring her pet dog But NO dogs on campus. We don't think Mr Wideman would bring a class pet because he has the computer cart in his class and he would not want it getting in it. by Avery and Nidaa! Today in Math, students were introduced to word problems involving money. They also practiced adding larger amounts of money, which they discovered, really wasn't that much more difficult!
Our Language Arts focus all week has been our novel study, "Fantastic Mr. Fox." We wrote our last example response as a group. Starting tomorrow, students will be expecting to respond independently to their reading. In Social Studies, we began the planning phase of our new assignment. Students will have to create a piece of art that represents First Nation beliefs and way of life. They will be assessed based on strands in both the Social Studies, and Language Arts curriculum. Student artwork should be thoughtful, and they will need to provide explanation of the choices they made. We are hard at work on some exciting news stories! Stay tuned to the blog to see daily stories about the happenings in Room 20. Reminders: no school Friday Movie Night is coming to Rosscarrock December 20! :) Mrs. Rowein This week in Math, we will continue our work with money. Students are now practicing adding totals. The most efficient strategy we have found, is to use mental math to add our cents and dollars separately, then add the two amounts together.
Butters has been in our classroom three times now! The kids love to watch her mannerisms, and are learning about her personality. So far, everyone has been very kind and gentle with Butters, which makes me very proud. Last week we started a class Novel Study on Fantastic Mr. Fox. Students will be learning the "Reading Power" methods of responding to text. Parents, if you are interested, my Reader Response program is based on a book called "Reading Power" by Adrienne Gear. Many of her ideas about discussing ad responding to reading are applicable to home reading as well. Today we had Scientists in School visit our classroom! All afternoon students worked through a series of 6 stations all about rocks and minerals. A geologist brought in lots of fun and authentic materials, and led us through each station. Reminders: No school Friday- PD Day! No spelling test this week. Movie Night is coming to Rosscarrock on Thursday, December 20! Cost is only $2.00! |
