The past two days in Math, students have been learning about ordering numbers, and identifying which number is least or greatest. We have started using learning targets so that students are more aware of their learning goals.
In Language Arts, we have been focusing on reader responses. Yesterday we read the book, "When I was Eight" about a young girls experience at residential schools. It was a heartfelt story that brought up many different feelings. It also connected to Orange Shirt Day, which is happening at our school tomorrow. In Social Studies students are working on planning their iMovies about Alberta. Next week they will spending lots of time using technology to create their digital masterpieces! Reminders: Orange Shirt Day Thursday! Terry Fox Run Friday! Spelling Test Friday!

There are three ways that we can support our school online at https://adoptaschool.indigo.ca/eng/schools/22.
1. Book Bonus: For every two books you donate to our school online, the Love of Reading Foundation will donate a bonus book, up to 100 books!* 2. Tell a Story, Give a Story. Every time you post a story to our Adopt a School profile, the Love of Reading Foundation will donate one book in support of our school library, up to 20 books! 3. Adopt a School Story Contest: “Heart” your favorite story to help a school for a chance to win* big! The five most-loved stories in each province will be entered into a random draw for a chance to win a $2,500 Indigo eGiftcard to purchase books for their adopted school. The remaining four top “hearted” schools in each province will win a $500 Indigo eGiftcard to purchase books! Choose wisely because you only get one shot to “Heart” a story! Our upcoming Terry Fox Run will be held on Friday September 28. We'll be meeting in the gym at 10:30am for a short assembly before we make our way outside to start our run around the perimeter of the school field. We'll aim to run from about 10:45am-11:15am, with students having their hands marked for each lap that they complete. At the end of the run, we'll get a total for each class, as well as for the whole school. Volunteers are welcome to join us for the assembly and the run on Friday.
Toonies for Terry may be brought into school this week. Please note that any donations or pledges are completely optional. Any donations will be collected in classrooms during the week, and can also be left in the office. On the day of the run, students may wish to wear an "I'm running for . . . . " sticker to show their support for a family member or friend that has been impacted by cancer. Please have a conversation with your child regarding who they might run for. If students don't have a particular individual that they would like to run for, they can write Terry's name on the sticker instead. Thank you for your support. We're looking forward to a great run day! Today students received their first spelling list! The list is from an online resource. I have chosen to start everyone with the grade 3 lists because based of what I have seen in our class, these words will be a challenge for most. We will work through all the grade 3 lists, then move on to grade 4 halfway through the year.
In Math, our lesson's focus was on comparing numbers to decide which is bigger. We have been doing daily math problems, which approach learning from an inquiry point. These have proven to be an exciting challenge for the kids, and have also given me plenty of information as to their problem solving and communication skills! After lunch, students were introduced to a new "Partner Reading" routine. Students will now be reading with a partner every day after lunch. Grade 3 are starting with short stories, and grade 4 are reading chapter books. After reading, they are to respond to what they read by sharing a few sentences about their connections, predictions, questions or feelings about the book. In Social Studies today, students were assigned a region of Alberta, and responsible for researching information about that areas natural environment. It proved to be more challenging than I expected, and is something we will have to come back to tomorrow! Reminders: Crime Not to Read is only for grade three this year. It will be on Wednesday the 26, and will happen the last Wednesday of every month for the remainder of the year. Grade four will have their own special time with me during that period. Orange Shirt Day is on Thursday. Orange Shirt Day recognizes Alberta's residential school history, and opens up opportunity for conversations around bullying and racism. Terry Fox Run Friday! Make sure you are dressed for the weather and wearing appropriate shoes. :) Miss Mielke Today students worked the hardest I have seen all year!
In Math, we looked at saying, writing, expanding, and drawing numbers. The focus of our next few days in Math will be representing numbers in different ways. In Language Arts, students used their knowledge of our Social Studies vocabulary to complete sentence frames. Sentence frames are a great tool because they help students learn to use specific vocabulary, and also sharpen their thinking skills on proper sentence organization. In Social Studies, students learned how to organize ideas in a simple web graphic organizer. Tomorrow they will be applying this skill to their own research. We have been doing lots of running games in Phys Ed to prepare for the Terry Fox run! Students are building both their speed and stamina (while getting in a great workout!) After recess, students finished typing a fall writing sample in their Google docs. Then, they learned how to save it to their computer, and upload it as an artifact. This writing sample will be visible to me, and will be used as formative assessment for what we need to work on in writing this year. Don't forget to sign up for a conference time this week! :) Miss Mielke Student conferences are next Thursday and Friday! Use the link below to sign up for a time.
sis.cbe.ab.ca/public/home.html Week 2 of school is almost done and we are finally in the swing of things!
This week, students were introduced to our school-wide math program, Jump Math. With this program, students will receive hands-on whole class lessons, and also have time to work individually in a book. Those who need targeted intervention and extra supports like manipulatives will continue to receive those supports. This year, our Language Arts schedule alternates between reading days and writing days. To assess and develop reading skills, I have had students do a series of activities in order to develop a summary of a short story. We also began formal reading testing, which will run all the way through the next week or two. In writing, we are looking at what makes good writing. Students have learned about adjectives and adverbs, or describing words. They have also taken part in a few Daily Edits already, where they are responsible for finding and editing mistakes in a paragraph. In Social Studies, students were introduced to their first unit on Quality of Life in Alberta. During this unit, students will be researching and presenting their findings in a short video. Today students took part in a key words lesson, to help develop their research skills. The Terry Fox run is coming up in two weeks! We have been learning a little bit about Terry Fox each day this week, and next week will start training for our run. Just like last week, we will be doing our Friday Walk and Talk tomorrow. We will always do our Walk and Talk on Fridays , unless it is an indoor recess day. Students need to be prepared for the weather! :) Miss Mielke
Over the last few days, we have been having lots of fun getting to know each other in Room 20!
This morning we started off with a communication challenge. One student had to explain (using ONLY words) how to draw a picture to a partner who could not look at the picture. In Math, students learned a game that connected to yesterdays work, of finding multiple ways to represent the number 20. Its called "Make 20" and can be played at home with just a deck of cards! I highly recommend students and parents playing math game together at home to reinforce concepts and practice mental math. Music has been awesome this week! We are lucky to have the Ms. Cook as our music teacher this year! In Social Studies, I tested students knowledge of our place in the world with a little mapping activity. We will be focusing on quality of life in Alberta, and learning about Alberta's past for the first have of the school year. Tomorrow we are starting a routine that will span for the entire year. Every Friday, I will meet students outside first thing in the morning for a short walk around the school yard. It is a great chance to get in some physical activity, and build relationships. Please ensure your child is always dressed appropriately for the weather. :) Miss Mielke We had a fantastic first day in Room 20!
We spent most of the day getting to know one another, and learning the rules and routines of Room 20. We read the book "We Don't Eat our Classmates." It is about an adorable little T-Rex who just can't help but eat her classmates! Unfortunately, that leads to her having a tough time making friends! After reading, we discussed what NOT to do in the classroom, and students made little illustrations to display on our door. Our new hours have resulted in us having quite a different day than last year. Lunch is now shorter, and recess is in the afternoon. Students will be provided with a time to eat a snack in the afternoon, as there is no food allowed outdoors this year to prevent littering. Students ended their day by writing me a letter about themselves so that I can get to know everyone on a more personal level. I can't wait for what the rest of the school year has in store! :) Miss Mielke |
