My apologies for not posting in so long..things have been very busy in Room 20!
In Math, students continue to work on multiplication. Now, they are extending their thinking, and applying multiplication skills to real-world scenarios and problems. In Language Arts, we have been discussing the difference between fact and opinion in writing. Students have identified facts from non-fiction stories, written their own opinions about a given topic, and had to select whether sentences were written as facts or opinions. This unit will be helpful for students upcoming Social Studies task where they will have to write a fact-based paragraph. In Social Studies, students have been learning about the immigration boom, and early settlement in Alberta. As a class, we have looked at many historical photos, and had great conversations about the details pictures can tell us. Yesterday, students read a detailed paragraph that connected to a historical photo they were familiar with. Students had to identify 3 important facts that were unique to that period in history. We are just wrapping up our floor hockey unit in Phys. Ed! Since there is not school this Friday, students chose to do our Yoga class on Thursday. Next week we will be moving on to net and wall activities. Reminders: Crime Not to Read for Grade 3 tomorrow! Pink Shirt Day Tomorrow! No School Friday -PD Day Eat the Rainbow Challenge starts next week! :) Mrs. Rowein

We have a fun and busy week planned in Room 20!
In Math, students continue to learn about multiplication. This week, grade fours will begin two digit by one digit multiplication! In Language Arts students are drafting their own original Fairy Tales. Our writing focus for this task is not only story development, but also paragraph organization and dialogue. Culture Night is Wednesday. All Rosscarrock families are invited to come and learn about the unique cultures that make up our school. There was also be delicious food samples and entertainment! Our class has been working hard on our Canada display. The kids are excited to show off what they've done. Tomorrow students will be making mailboxes for Valentine's Day. Students are to bring in a small box to decorate. If they do not have a box, they can make an envelope instead using school materials. Valentine's Day exchange will be Wednesday February 13 because there is no school on Thursday or Friday. If you choose to bring in cards or treats, make sure you bring one for everybody. A class list was sent home Friday with everyone's name. :) Mrs. Rowein This week in Language Arts we are continuing our unit on Fairy Tales. Today we read two different versions of The Three Little Pigs and compared them. Students used a Venn diagram to organize their thinking and had to justify which story was their favorite using details from the book.
In Science, everyone has now completed their dacta pulley. Our goals when using the dacta were: -I can follow a scientific procedure. -I can problem solve when I run into a challenge. Our next and final simple machine we are looking at will be wheels and axles. In Math, students continue to build understanding and practice their skills in multiplication. Lately we have been looking at helpful patterns when we multiply, such as all multiples of 2 are even, or all multiples of 5 end in either 5 or 0. These tricks are helpful in mastering mental facts. Students also have learned how to use a times table and practice it during our new favorite game: multiplication bingo! In preparation for cultural night, our class has been busy learning about Canada. With so many different cultures and background represented in our classroom, we decide to choose the one we all have in common. So far, students have researched famous people and interesting places in Canada, and began a class mosaic art project. Reminders: Bring back any Cultural Night sign-up forms ASAP. Cultural Night is Wednesday February 13th. We are still in need of volunteers for spring field trips. If you wish to volunteer, please email me at [email protected]. You can stop by the office during school hours and Mrs. Peterson can assist you with getting your volunteer clearance. :) Mrs. Rowein |
