Week 2 of school is almost done and we are finally in the swing of things!
This week, students were introduced to our school-wide math program, Jump Math. With this program, students will receive hands-on whole class lessons, and also have time to work individually in a book. Those who need targeted intervention and extra supports like manipulatives will continue to receive those supports. This year, our Language Arts schedule alternates between reading days and writing days. To assess and develop reading skills, I have had students do a series of activities in order to develop a summary of a short story. We also began formal reading testing, which will run all the way through the next week or two. In writing, we are looking at what makes good writing. Students have learned about adjectives and adverbs, or describing words. They have also taken part in a few Daily Edits already, where they are responsible for finding and editing mistakes in a paragraph. In Social Studies, students were introduced to their first unit on Quality of Life in Alberta. During this unit, students will be researching and presenting their findings in a short video. Today students took part in a key words lesson, to help develop their research skills. The Terry Fox run is coming up in two weeks! We have been learning a little bit about Terry Fox each day this week, and next week will start training for our run. Just like last week, we will be doing our Friday Walk and Talk tomorrow. We will always do our Walk and Talk on Fridays , unless it is an indoor recess day. Students need to be prepared for the weather! :) Miss Mielke
