Last weeks field trip to the National Music Center turned out to be a great success! We had the chance to look at so many different instruments, technology, and displays. Our guide was fantastic and we learned a lot while also having some time to play some interesting instruments we had never heard of before. We were so inspired that we thought we would try to make our own instruments. We've been planning and designing our instruments the last few days but tomorrow we will have the afternoon to create something awesome!
Our 12 Days of Fitness has been going well and we've been introduced to some great new workouts. We definitely have had some sore muscles these past few days but we've been feeling fantastic and have become more focused. If you could make sure our students have proper footwear and clothing during our Gym class that would be very helpful. In Social Studies our class has been loving learning about dinosaurs and paleontology. It's been so cool to hear about these creatures that used to wander around Alberta. We've even been keeping our eyes out for any fossils that might be in Calgary. In math we have been working on our skip counting. Ask your kid to count by 2's, 3's, 4's, or 5's and they should be able to get all the way to 100 no problem.

This week in Language Arts, students have learned a new reading strategy called the "Closed Syllable" strategy. Closed syllable words have a short vowel sound sandwiched between two or more consonants. For example: cat, napkin, Atlantic, are all closed syllable words. By identifying the syllables, students can better read long multi-syllable words. Students have also been busy illustrating their winter stories that they typed last week.
In Social Studies, our focus for the week has been paleontology. We are continuing to learn about Alberta's unique resources, and fossils are definitely one of them! Tomorrow we have a Skype presentation from a paleontologist at Royal Tyrell Museum. We are so excited! Today was the kids' first music class with Mrs. Rowein. Over the next few weeks students students will be responding to music. This weeks question is, "How does different music make us move differently?" Students have a wonderful time dancing and moving differently to match different rhythms, lyrics, beats, and tempos of songs. In Math, students are continuing their work on addition and subtraction with regrouping. Today, they did a new activity that connected to our reading strategy, and graphed the amount of names with different numbers of syllables in our classroom. This week in Science, students have been hard at work on the Science Important Book. The Important Book is a pattern book. Students created their own pattern book based on different parts of the ear. Speaking of Science...next week is our hearing and sound field trip to Bell Music Centre! Please return any unsigned forms by tomorrow. Important Reminder: Parent-teacher interviews are tomorrow evening, and Friday from 8:00am-1:00pm. Please sign up for a time if you have not done so already. :) Mrs. Rowein and Mr. Abma Rosscarrock students will be participating in “The 12 Days of Fitness” challenge. Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday students will learn a new skill and participate in a rigorous workout with either Mrs. Rowein or Mrs. Fraser. This will help students learn about ways to keep their bodies fit and healthy. Please have students dress in comfortable clothes and have them bring a water bottle to school.
Rosscarrock School
Thursday, November 21, 4:30 – 8:00 Friday, November 22, 8:00 – 1:00 The Usborne Publishing Company produces colorful and fascinating educational books for children of all ages on virtually every topic imaginable. The website is www.usbornebooksathome.ca This Literacy Fair will provide you with an opportunity to purchase these books for your home library, while supporting Rosscarrock library with some free books. An Usborne consultant will be on hand to help you choose from the many new titles on display, and to answer any questions about these high quality and exceptional books. Visa, MasterCard or cash will be accepted. Look forward to seeing everyone. In case you didn’t know, the Calgary Public Library gives you access to ebooks through the LIBBY. A Library assistant at another school learned something interesting about LIBBY, which I’m passing on to you in case you didn’t know either. If a reader with Dyslexia is using LIBBY to read ebooks, they can go into ‘Reading settings’ and click “OpenDyslexic”, which will change the font. Some of the picture books may not have that option, but novels and some non-fiction definitely do. LIBBY allows you to read a book in the browser, so it’s not tied to a specific device. In case you didn’t know, there is a kid’s version of LIBBY, so they don’t have to wade through lists of psychological thrillers to find something they can read.
If you’ve used the CPL’s Overdrive app, you will already know how to use LIBBY. Access to LIBBY can be found here: https://calgarylibrary.ca/read-learn-and-explore/eresources/?audience=kids Under the “eReading Room for kids” option. That link will take you to a list of other interesting resources like National Geographic kids, Science Reference Centre, Bookflix, and others. Just put in your CPL card information, or a student’s, and off you go. The Student Conferences site will be available for parent-teacher interview bookings effective today at 4 pm.
Further information for parents: § Parents can book a parent-teacher interview time through their CBE Parent Account. Click “CBE Apps” on the navigation bar, then click on “My School Conferences”. § The Parent User Guide for Student Conferences is available on the CBE website. § Additionally, they can call into the office at 403-777-8390 to schedule an interview time. This week in Language Arts, we are working on descriptive stories about winter. We were inspired by the book "Goodbye Geese" which uses personification to describe winter as a person. Once students are finished typing, they will have a chance to illustrate their work!
In Social Studies, our big question is "How do Albertans live off the land?" Last week our focus was farming, and this week we will be learning about forestry. This week, students will be doing art with Mrs. Fraser instead of their usual music class. This is due to some uncertainties with our new budget. We will give more information about the future of our music program as we have it. In Health, we have been focusing on the pillars of care which are: Care for Self, Care for Others, Care for Place. Next week we will have a new topic! In Science, students are continuing their unit on Hearing and Sound. On November 28, we will be taking a field trip connected to our Science topic to the Bell Music Centre. We are looking for volunteers. If you can you volunteer please email Mr. Abma. Keep an eye out for field trip forms! Students are continuing their unit on addition and subtraction with regrouping math. It is pretty hard! Parents can support their children at home by giving them addition and subtraction questions that require regrouping. Today at lunch was the first Playground Ambassador meeting. We were so proud of how many kids want to be involved in helping others! A reminder that we no longer have a set library schedule. Students may exchange their books any day of the week as needed. :) Mrs. Rowein We are finished our Science unit on Waste and have learned a lot on how to better take care of the world around us. Please encourage our students to put into practice some of the skills we learned in class, such as recycling and composting. We are now beginning to learn about Hearing and Sound and request that you send a pair of headphones, that can be plugged into a computer, to school with your kid as it would assist our learning greatly. We have also began learning some of the skills that go into playing soccer. If you could please make sure your kid has proper footwear it would be appreciated as it improves safety in P.E. class. We look forward to this week and really enjoyed last week as we had a great Halloween parade this past Thursday and saw some wonderfully carved pumpkins created by our classmates!
Three Pillars of Care
Our school uses the Three Pillars of Care to help students and staff communicate our shared expectations. These pillars are referred to daily, both within our classes and we proudly recognize students who are outstanding role models. Care for Self · Be on time for school. · Be organized and return notices promptly. · Be accountable for your actions. · Be clean and tidy in your dress and with your belongings. · Be prepared for learning by listening and following directions. · Be responsible and use appropriate language in school, on the playground and on field trips. Care for Others · Be kind and courteous to classmates, staff and visitors to our school. · Be aware and tell an adult when you see someone who is hurt either in their body or in their feelings. · Be responsible for making sure that others feel safe and welcome at our school. Care for Place · Be respectful of public property, community and personal property. · Be thoughtful about your litter and place it in the garbage cans by the school doors. · Be responsible for keeping your work, eating areas and playground tidy. · Be careful to remove wet and dirty footwear to help keep our school clean and dry. · Be environmentally aware by reducing daily waste and bringing lunches and snacks in recyclable containers. We learned about some natural cleaners in science class today and were hoping that our parents could possibly show our students the natural cleaners they might use. We have been having lots of fun reading stories in front of the class and are learning what it means to be a good public speaker. We also finished up our maps of Alberta and are quite proud of how they all turned out.
We sent a form home with all the kids the other day but here is the following information for those it might not have received it. If you registered online, you do not need to complete the Noon Supervision Registration Form that was sent home this week (attached). Noon Supervision Fees § The 4-day lunch program at Rosscarrock School is $27.50/month/child. § This fee covers supervision of students during the lunch hour. § It does not include food. § If paying by cheque, attach to the Noon Supervision Registration Form. § Cash is not accepted.
